The Chacarera is a dance of Argentinean origin. It is a genre of folk music that, for many Argentines, serves as a rural counterpart to the cosmopolitan imagery of the Tango.  In Buenos Aires, many milongas will include a few dances in this style. Street Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUaKrK4BKsY&feature=related
Omar and Monica are international Tango stars with extensive and illustrious performing and teaching experience. We are very fortunate to be taught this dance by them, as they are delightful people and they make the chacarera look & feel delightful.

They are THE MASTERS of many of our younger generation of masters, and they bring with them an intimate knowledge and heritage of Tango de Salon that is priceless. They are  also lovely people who are passionate about passing on that knowledge from their masters- so this is a great opportunity to ask them many questions,as well as watch their elegant and musical dancing in a social context.

Themes of Classes If you think you know enough about the essentials of Tango de Salon; posture, embrace, walking & musicality –think again! Jorge and Maria have an utterly rooted and uncompromising sense of detail, essence and subtlety that could more profoundly improve your tango than any amount of steps and twirls!

Within the progression of each class, there will also be opportunities to explore the aspects that make Villa Urquiza so expressive for both leaders followers, including what happens between a step and the following: for instance playing with your feet while dancing socially, and & how dancing with different Orchestras can change your style, dynamic, your steps and your embellishments.

(1) Technique for the Tango Walk: details, tips and suggestions for the perfect Tango de Salon Walk & interpretation of the music.

(2) Essential Elements of the Tango Villa Urquiza style: posture, embrace and elegance. Finding the comfort within yourself and the intimacy with your partner.

(3) Double Time: the essence of keeping your changes of dynamic elegant and integral with the music. Mastering stylish walking patterns in double time.

(4) Countertime: playing with and understanding this rhythm. How to change dynamic, and steps in order to fully express this rhythm with different orchestras.

(5) Gathering all the different dynamics  (time, double time, pausing, countertime) together!

(6) Turns: unveiling the secrets for the execution of smooth, elegant giros. Balance, hold, the lead and the woman\'s role.

(7) Developing the Villa Urquiza Walk; more essential tips and techniques to make your walk the most delicious part of your dance!

(8) Tango. Turns part II; Giro’s in Villa Urquiza style, with different combinations.

(9) Milonga: the essence of Milonga: its musicality, technique & opportunities to play.

(10) Turns with Pauses: Giros and how liberate your turns in order to uniquely express the music and the moment.

(11) Steps and adornments: after a week of finding the ease and flow of in your Tango, more complex Villa Urquiza steps to take you to the further…….

Levels: No complete beginners. Previous experience of the close embrace, musicality, and Tango de Salon essential. If you have any queries about your level please contact me. As I hope many of the students will be from Tangosouthlondon, there will be a good standard/awareness in all the above. I believe this will facilitate the classes to progress well, and in depth. Obviously, the more classes you can do, the better it is for the whole group to evolve at the optimum level. Priority booking will be given to those who can do the most classes in order to help create such a group.

CLASS SIZES WILL BE LIMITED TO 30 COUPLES TO ENSURE QUALITY

Prices:

Please note:   Weekdays   1 class = 1 45hrs (+ a 15 minute break)

Local Places to eat/shop/Stay

The hall is next to Lordship lane, which is a lovely street with many café, restaurant, boutiques, and all amenities.   I have found two local B&B’s that look pleasant:

Uplands: http://barterinns.co.uk/uplandsbar/hotel.htm
Wishing Well Inn http://www.wishingwellinn.com/

For a very economic, but rather rudimentary accommodation that is also nearby, Peckham lodge might fit the bill! http://peckham-lodge-london.hotel-rez.com/

Publicity notice We would very much like to make the visit of J&M, and all the events during this week,  reflect our love of Salon tango, community, respect for each other on the dance floor, and passion for tango- which I am sure it will! For various important reasons, Tangosouthlondon will not be publicizing this event except on our website& Leaflets. Please do not publicize this workshop online - but all publicity by word of mouth/emails/telephone/text/pigeon to the people you think would love to be there welcome… and just contact me if you have any other publicity ideas! Thank you!

Read here Miss Hedgehog's great review of our monthly milonga!
May, 2010

Tango South London

The Tango South London Ball is on every last Sunday of the month. It\'s at the Dulwich Constitutional Club, 33 East Dulwich Grove. It starts at 20:30 and ends at about 23:15.

The Class: I didn\'t plan to be there for the class but I arrived earlier than I meant to and monthand came in 10 minutes before it ended, so I sat down to watch. Claire Loewe and Luis Rodriguez were teaching a class on how to dance milonga socially in a civilised way. It included some simple elements, feasible musicality, and a lot of encouragement to respect one anothers\' space, refrain from rushing, and use the corners of the floor properly. A lot of the results looked pretty good. Both of them sometimes teach with other people too. You\'ll see them dancing socially with plenty of people at various places in London.

Layout and Atmosphere: It\'s a longish rectangular room like a large school hall or the kind of place the local drama society might put on plays. You come in at one end of one long side, and the stage is at the other end to your right. In the corner facing you is a booth for the DJ. Around three sides of the dance floor, facing it, are lots of tables with pretty gauzy tablecloths, and chairs behind. They form a nearly-solid barrier with spaces here and there. There are twinkly LEDs draped along the front of the stage on the fourth side, and tealights on the tables. The tables were far enough in to leave two or three feet between seated people and wall; I almost never had to step onto the dancefloor except to dance. This is a blessing and helps the flow a lot; the only problem is people leaving their stuff scattered all over the place. The floor was more than big enough. There were slightly too few chairs for everyone to sit down during the concert. Lighting is good - I could get the nod (albeit a very spelled-out one) from right across the room. The loos are through the door to the left of the stage.Through doors on the other side of the room is a large comfortable bar, very roomy and quiet, with muzak. There was also a bit of smooth floor in there which someone used to review with a friend what had been done in the class.  Basically it\'s a community hall, the same sort of thing as the Welsh Centre, but nicer. The room was quite warm, but not excessively. It was a very warm evening.

The atmosphere all evening was calm, civilised and cheerful. From what I saw, I felt that had been consciously encouraged by the content and presentation of the class, and my impression from other people is that, if so, they\'ve been fairly consistent about this for long enough that it\'s positively affected who goes and how they behave. It had a nice family feeling which I felt welcomed into. It felt as though the general idea was to have fun and permit other people to do the same.

Hospitality: Good. My single G&T with an ice cube and slice of lemon was £2.40 from the members bar, served by venue staff. I was also served an orange juice and a large glass of tap water for £1.25. There is a coat rack in the bar, which I and some others made use of, but many people left their things on chairs. It\'s probably a good idea to bring a kitbag. There were two or three club members in the bar (ignore the \'members only\' signs - they don\'t count on tango night) and I felt that my stuff was perfectly safe. The Ladies\' sprang a leak during the class and was put out of action - this was dealt with by a series of emergency announcements which converted the Gents\' into the Ladies\' and opened a different Gents\' downstairs. So I can report, unusually, that the Gents is roomy and clean and dry with good light, but has a broken lock.

Anyone or anything interesting that turned up or happened: They had live music, a young bandoneonist, Carlos Becu. He played two sets, each consisting of a concert part and a dancing part. He was fine, he played what he played, you could dance to it, and people did, including me. He likes Pugliese. I wouldn\'t have minded dispensing with at least one of the non-danceable sets, but it\'s always exciting to dance to live music. You can form your own opinion from his MySpace page.

What I thought of the DJing: Marek Szotkowski DJ\'d. I\'ve seen him before, and again he did a professional job; tandas of four, cortinas, relaxed upbeat stuff to start with and keeping the more challenging pieces for later although in this case that it was mostly supplanted by the live music. 100% traditional, 0% alternative. Even the valses and milongas were tandas of four. I think there was the classic proportion of valses and milongas, which is significantly more than most people play. He doesn\'t seem to mind people dancing to the cortinas, which are rock and salsa, sometimes a full track so you can do it properly. The tandas made sense to me and didn\'t do any silly attention-seeking or make me go \"what??\".

Getting in: £10 including the class, £7 later according to the website (I was charged even less, by a person temporarily on the desk near the end of the class, so I think that must have been a mistake). Bargain either way.

Getting there and getting home: I got a train to Brixton and walked around the corner to take a bus at Lambeth Town Hall. If you take the 37 from there, get off at next stop after Dulwich Community Hospital; walk a few steps in the same direction the bus was going, cross at the zebra crossing, and you\'re there. The stop going the other way is directly outside the hall.  You can stay to the end and just make it back onto the Tube network in time for the last train, but I cut it very very fine because my bus did not appear and I had to wait an extra fifteen minutes for the next one. I saw many other buses a short distance away on the main road, and East Dulwich station is within 10 minutes\' walk. The buses are given on the website. Check your route carefully - remember it\'s Sunday, and everything closes earlier.

The website: http://www.tangosouthlondon.co.uk/ - it tells you when, where, and how much it is to get in, but not all of the pages get updated. The News page, which does, is here.

How it went: Very well. I had a very nice evening. I knew quite a few of the women there, but hardly any of the men, so I just took the first dance that presented itself to start myself off; my dances ranged from the harmless to the excellent and included more than one new partner I would be delighted to dance with again. I got very few bumps, and they were very trivial, nothing more than gentle contact - everyone could, and did, pull out in time. I noticed that there was quite a lot of variation in style on the floor, in the sense of fairly recognisable and distinct flavours of embrace, technique, and content of dance, and I danced more than one of them myself, but there wasn\'t a lot of zigzagging wildly about at high speed, or grabbing huge amounts of space, so the variations didn\'t seem to be creating stress. At least, there was nothing serious and persistent enough to affect the atmosphere so that it became noticeable to me.

I had an evening that made me happier than I had been when I set out, at a very moderate price, with the music and dancing well above average. I might even make this journey in the winter. It\'s a pity that I have to leave before the end to get home in less than an hour and a half. If I was in South London there\'d be no question at all, every time.

Teatro Vivo; Tango theatre in Sept
September, 2009

If you fancy some deliciously decadent, soulful and musical theatre with Tango (of course!) check out Teatro Vivo\'s \'Hothouse\' production. I have been happy to collaborate with them with some choreography, and although I have not yet seen the whole thing (I will be going to see them on 17th Sept), I liked their pluck and verve! The Horniman glass conservatory is a beautiful venue, and their reviews are excellent.

Dates;

The Bakehouse Theatre Blackheath:8, 9, 10th September

The Horniman Museum ,Forest Hill:15, 17th September
The Albany Deptford: 19th September

Tangosouthlondon ball 28th June+ special screening of tango film 'Into your Arms'
June, 2009

NEXT TANGO BALL  SUNDAY 28th June\"\"

Special screenig of short film \'Into your Arms\'
Ruth Pethybridges\'s stunning short film (10 mins) about tango and palliative care in Buenos Aires.
All profits from this evening\'s milonga will go to the hospice featured in the film- which is currently the only hospice for palliative care in the whole of Buenos Aires, with something like only six beds available.  Ruth has personal contacts at this hospice, which means we know the money raised will go directly into funding the hospice and more tango sessions there.

Ruths\'s film is about the effect of the tango lessons on staff and patients at the hospice, and it is also a beautiful film about various peoples ideas of Tango. It is funny, articulate and moving, and by the end of it you feel inspired to dance!

Extra class next Sunday 26thth April with guest teachers-BOOK NOW!
April, 2009

Special tango class next Sunday 26th April, 2-4pm.  Improver/intermediate. (No beginners this time, sorry!)

I wanted to take full advantage of Sandra and Loyd\'s teaching, who as you might know already, will be teaching the milonga class at 7 15pm, and performing later in our ball . I have therefore set up an extra class with them, focusing on Tango rytmico, and especially looking at decorations, and how men and women can allow for them!

Sandra and Loyd have set up a successful tango school in Birmingham, (www.tangoinbrum.co.uk) and have been teaching and performing their truely authentic salon tango with an emphasis on style and detail. Most recent performances include at Corrientes, and they have been invited to perform in the opening Milonga of an International Tango Festival in Italy (Tango d\'Abrazo - Summer 2009), were the invitees names include the worldwide famous Javier Rodriguez & Andrea Misse, Sergio Natario & ALejandra Arrue.
Examples of their performances which are always improvised!

Sandra and Loyd have studied intensively with my great teacher, Andrea Misse, and the amazing Javier Rodriguez. I think we will get a good insight as to how these great teachers are currently developing their style through S&l, as well as their synthesis of the other great teachers they often work with in Buenos Aires.

The price will be £15 for 2 hours.
The venue is our usual Constitiutional Hall, 33 East Dulwich Grove, SE22 8PW.

Please let me know asap if you want to register - you will need to reserve a place, as I am endeavouring to have even number of men and women.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Latest videos of Claire and Luis
November, 2008

We have been very fortunate to have a very gifted and experienced film maker (and dancer!) as one of our students; Ryszard Musiel.

Ryszard has been working on a video of Luis and I, so if you want to take a look

 www.rmwdance.co.uk/Tango/ClaireLuis.html

He has also done a taster of our last ball, so those who were there see if you can spot yourselves- if you think we look a bit peculiar thats because we were dressed fiendishly for halloween !

Ryszard has his own website with his other beautiful dance films (including Contemporary, Tango and Flamenco themes), so do have a look at www.rmwdance.co.uk

The entire event will take place on the concourse at the Tower of London and will involve the new Ford Fiesta and lots of Tango dancing! The event is free and members of the public are encouraged to come along and enjoy the evening’s performance.

The evening is due to begin at 6.30pm (7pm start of performance) with two stunt drivers using the Fiesta’s to perform a unique adaptation of the Tango dance. Strictly Come Dancing winner Mark Ramprakash and his partner Kylie Jones will join the cars and continue the Tango performance.

Then as soon as this section of the performance has finished tangosouthlondon dancers, along with other Tango schools, will take to the floor to perform the Tango dance along with Mark and the cars.

A 20 piece live Orchestra will provide the music for the event and they will play the Tanguera and the Libertango. After the final song has played fireworks will bring the event to a stunning finale.

Once the fireworks (and applause) has finished we will encourage the members of the public, which will have been watching, to come and have a dance with us.

compassion and connection in the streets of London

TangoCommute attracts hundreds of tango dancers onto seven London
bridges and into seven London train stations on the 7th of July between 6 and 7pm.
The spirit of compassion and connection between two people expressed in
tango inspires thousands of Londoners during their evening commute as part of the Big Dance 2008 organized by the Mayor of London and the Arts Council England.
TangoCommute is accessible to all, whether as members of the public or
as participants, as total beginners or expert dancers. The event is created in collaborationwith all London tango schools which choose to be affiliated to the TangoCommute project. Tango dancers/commuters use a personal music player, 2 sets ofheadphones and one head
phone splitter, the ‘TangoCommute enabling device’. TangoCommuters dance
in public silently for fellow commuters across the UK capital amidst the evening rush hour. Tango schools offer special headphone-tango classes for aspiring TangoCommuters and sell TangoCommute enabling devices for the price of £3. Dance couples register with their tango schools or on-line and choose one of the 14 designated public locations and tango music can be downloaded from www.tangocommute.com. TangoCommute will become an annual landmark event of compassion and connection for and with London’s commuters on the 7th of July, a day otherwise exclusively remembered for the tragic events on 7/7/2005.
Are you inspired to participate whether as commuter/dancer, tango
school, tango musician, media partner, spokes person or sponsor? Visit www.tangocommute.com for
more information.
You can contact TangoCommute by sending an email to

Visit of Gabriel Marino, teaching at Tangosouthlondon all of May
April, 2008

Classes continue this week as usual, but next Monday 5th May there will be no class as its a bank Holiday. Classes resume as normal on 6th May.

Our resident teacher Luis Rodriguez will be returning to his motherland, Argentina, for the month of May for a long awaited break to be with his family and friends in B.A. We look forward to having him back teaching for tangosouthlondon again in June.

So for the month of May, Tangosouthlondon is fortunate to have a special guest teacher from B.A- Gabriel Marino.
Gabriel has recently been teaching and performing Tango in Athens in 'Tango Malambo', a show of Argentinian tango and folcklore (Directed by Juan Corbalan, Tango Pasion). He has taught around Europe, and was a dancer  at Café Tortoni (most famous tango cafe in Buenos Aires). He is a wonderful dancer, and teaches with a clear and authentic style.

Gabriel will be taking all Tangosouthlondon classes with me in May, and we will be performing in The Dulwich Fair, Sunday 18th May.

Next milonga: The wedding Ball, Sunday 27th April

''Tango Solo': a short poem by Eva Forrai, inspired by her lessons with Tangosouthlondon!
October, 2007

TANGO SOLO

fear is a four letter word

The final hour, sound of sweeping.

This is your suicide note.

“Step and collect, step and collect”

Figures of eight, shoulders and waist

gleam through the mist of canal banks.

“Step and collect, step and collect”

Walk in reverse, take a half turn,

do the box: naked now,

all the way to the ground.

“Step and collect, step and collect”

You’ve had full Sunday pleated nylon taffota

a tent of hair, beautiful down to the mud

flying the colours of mutiny, so anti-clockwise:

“Step and collect, step and collect”

Life’s been a sheer drop,

a litany of spiralling, incandescent falls.

This carousel draws longer and longer

shadows out of you now, who just

“Step and collect, step and collect”

headlong into mushy darkness,

a perfidious line drawn by the feet

scoring a symphony of silence

that watch

your scars open up,

step inside the wound

and collect.

Let go of anger, step back

to listen how others’feet

make the sound of sweeping

as they “Step and collect”

The Guardian, Feb 17th 2007: Claire's article on 'All you need to know about:Tango'.
March, 2007

"Keep your weight forward The first thing is to ensure your weight is over the front of your feet, not on your heels or in the centre. As you approach your partner, lean slightly forward and lift your ribs. At first this won't feel natural, but if you don't lean forward, there will be no space for your feet to do all the hooks and flicks that characterise tango." .... click here to view the complete article
